Opportunity
Worksite:  The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is
located 5 miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through
the Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office.

Purpose: Administrative Support Volunteers provide a myriad of functions that allow
NHOTIC to carry out its mission of portraying and interpreting the Oregon Trail experience
and its related themes, while preserving and protecting its historic, cultural, natural, and
visual features.

Timeframe: A schedule will be established for each Volunteer within the Center’s hours of
operation: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter months, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the peak
visitor season. Number of hours per week will be negotiated with each Volunteer.

Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit

Specific Duties: Compile statistics, provide office support services, deliver calendars to local
businesses, and update the volunteer bulletin board.

Qualifications/Skills: Ability to perform data entry on a computer. Driver’s license/insurance
if operating a government vehicle. Ability to work well with others. Organizational ability.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Tact and professionalism when dealing with
members of the public.

Training: NHOTIC will provide Center orientation; Volunteer Conduct, Rights and
Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; and Volunteer Safety. A background check is
required for individuals with access to government computers. Guidance will be provided for
specific tasks and desired outcomes.

Equipment: Access to a computer will be provided. Office equipment necessary to complete
the job is provided. Private vehicle may be used to deliver calendars, flyers, etc. to local
businesses. Mileage will be reimbursed at the government employee private vehicle rate. A
government vehicle may be provided if available.
