Opportunity
Worksite:  National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is located 5
miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through the
Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office. Work will be performed at the outdoor
mining exhibit.

Purpose: Gold Panning/Mining Interpreters provide insight on the rich mining history of
Baker County and the surrounding area.

Timeframe: A schedule will be developed for each volunteer based on their availability and
scheduled events at NHOTIC. The ability to work weekends is desirable.

Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit

Specific Duties: Demonstrate how to pan gold at the sluice box; teach the skill to visitors;
wear period dress and develop and/or deliver an interpretive talk about the history of gold
mining in Baker County.

Qualifications/Skills: Historical knowledge of mining, particularly in Baker County. Ability to
provide historically accurate answers to questions related to gold panning. Enjoy working
with children and adults; teaching/demonstrating a skill. This position requires standing
outdoors on possibly slippery rocks for up to one-hour at a time in a high desert climate.
Background check may be required for this position.

Training: NHOTIC will provide basic interpretation overview; Center orientation; Volunteer
Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; and Volunteer Safety.
An interpretive specialist will provide guidance/approval in developing talking points for the
demonstration.

Equipment: NHOTIC has period costumes available; however, interpreters may provide their
own period clothing with Center Director approval. Select tools and equipment may be
available through NHOTIC, or may be provided by the Volunteer. Specific equipment,
sources, and safety, care and handling of equipment will be detailed in the Individual
Volunteer Service Agreement.
