Opportunity
Worksite:  National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is located 5
miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through the
Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office. Work may be performed inside the
Interpretive Center, at the outside wagon encampment, or along the Oregon Trail segments
located at the site.

Purpose: National Historic Oregon Trail Interpreters provide insight on pioneer life along the
Trail to school groups and other visitors to the Center through hands-on demonstrations
and/or instruction on period skills and crafts.

Timeframe: A schedule will be developed for each volunteer based on their availability and
scheduled events at NHOTIC.

Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit

Specific Duties: Demonstrate and/or instruct others in crafts and skills common to pioneers
on the Oregon Trail. Individual volunteer’s skills and interests will be used in identifying craft
or skill to be demonstrated. Possibilities include: bead work, Dutch oven cooking, butter
making, dancing, story telling, pioneer games/toys, period clothing, horse shoeing,
gunsmithing, quilting, spinning, etc. Wear period dress and use historically accurate tools
and devices to interpret what you are doing.

Qualifications/Skills: Enjoy working with children and adults; teaching/demonstrating a skill.
Ability to provide historically accurate answers to questions related to skill or craft to be
demonstrated. Training will be available for volunteers with an interest in learning the
skills/crafts to be demonstrated.) A teaching, history, interpretation, and/or theater
background helpful, but not required. Background Check may be required for this position.
