Worksite: Outdoor Trail Area, National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC).
NHOTIC is located 5 miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is
administered through the Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office.
Purpose: Interpretive Walk Guides lead visitors back in time along the Oregon Trail.
Timeframe: A schedule will be developed for each volunteer based on their availability and
scheduled events at NHOTIC. The ability to work weekends is desirable.
Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit
Specific Duties: Lead an accurate and interesting interpretive walk at the Center relating to
mining heritage, natural history, or Oregon Trail history. Period dress is optional.
Qualifications/Skills: Ability to speak to a group in an outdoor setting. Ability to navigate the
portion of Trail selected for the guided tour. (NOTE: Various levels of accessibility and
duration can be accommodated on Trail Walks. Each program can be geared toward the
Volunteer’s abilities). Background check may be required for this position.
Training: NHOTIC will provide basic interpretation overview; Center orientation; Volunteer
Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; and Volunteer Safety.
An interpretive specialist will work with the volunteer as needed to ensure the volunteer is
prepared to present material and accurately answer questions.
Equipment: NHOTIC has period costumes available; however, interpreters may provide their
own period clothing with Center Director approval. Period clothing is not required for this
position. NHOTIC resource library is available for use while researching/developing talks.
