Opportunity
Worksite:  Leo Adler Theater, National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC).
NHOTIC is located 5 miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is
administered through the Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office.

Purpose: Living History Interpreters provide insight on pioneer life along the Trail to Center
visitors.

Timeframe: A schedule will be developed for each volunteer based on their availability and
scheduled events at NHOTIC. The ability to work weekends is desirable.

Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit

Specific Duties: Develop a research-based, historically-accurate character or program,
relevant to the Center’s themes to present in the Leo Adler Theater. Use accurate clothing
and props.

Qualifications/Skills: Skill in accurate, historical interpretation. Ability to perform in front of a
large audience. Ability to accurately answer visitor questions. History, interpretation and/or
theater background helpful. Training will be available for enthusiastic individuals with the
ability to learn the art of living history development and performance.

Training: NHOTIC will provide basic interpretation overview; Center orientation; Volunteer
Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; and Volunteer Safety.
Training will be provided in living history development and performance, depending on
volunteer’s existing skills/experience. Script must be pre-approved. Demonstrated ability to
perform and answer questions required prior to performance.

Equipment: NHOTIC has period costumes available; however, interpreters may provide their
own period clothing with Center Director approval. NHOTIC resource library is available for
use while researching/developing scripts/characters. Select props may be available through
NHOTIC, or may be provided by the Volunteer.
