Worksite: The Oregon Trail Shop is located within the National Historic Oregon Trail
Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is located 5 miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on
Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through the Bureau of Land Management, Vale District
Office.
Purpose: Sales Clerks and Shop Support personnel staff the Oregon Trail Shop sales
counter during open hours, interact with customers and assist them by answering
questions and showing merchandise. Assist with making sales using a point of sales cash
register and computer. Help with inventory and stocking. Assist with product development
and packaging. All Shop functions allow NHOTIC to carry out its mission of interpreting and
preserving the Oregon Trail experience and its related themes. The Oregon Trail Shop is a
non-profit business operated by Trail Tenders, Inc. All profits from the shop are used to
support programs and projects at NHOTIC.
Timeframe: A schedule will be established for each volunteer within the Center’s hours of
operation: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter months, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April 1 –
October 31. Regular schedules and on-call schedules both are available options. Number of
hours per week will be negotiated with each volunteer.
Number of Volunteers Needed: 3
Specific Duties: Retail Sales, Point of Sales Cash register, Public Contact.
Qualifications/Skills: Ability to communicate orally. Tact and professionalism when dealing
with the public. Interview with Shop Manager to determine that skills match current shop
needs.
Training: NHOTIC will provide Center orientation; Volunteer Conduct, Rights and
Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; Telephone Skills; Volunteer Safety. Shop
Manager and staff will provide shop operations, cash register operations.
Equipment: NHOTIC will provide volunteer aprons or vests and a volunteer name tag to be
worn while working in the shop.
