Worksite: Script development and other pre-performance preparation will take place at the
National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is located 5 miles east
of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through the Bureau of Land
Management, Vale District Office. Performances take place at schools and other educational
venues within a 100-mile radius of NHOTIC.
Purpose: The Traveling Trunk Interpreter supports the educational outreach goals of the
Center by providing living history performances for 3rd through 5th graders studying
Oregon Trail history. This outreach program was developed in response to requests from
schools that were unable to fund field trips to NHOTIC. The Traveling Trunk Interpreter
creates an interactive opportunity for students to visit with a true pioneer in their own
classroom at no cost to the school.
Timeframe: Performances take place during the school year (September through May), on an
intermittent, as-requested basis. Each performance requires less than 1 hour, plus travel
time. Script development and other preparation and training may take place throughout the
year. Time commitment will vary depending on project selected.
Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit
Specific Duties: Develop and present specialized trunk of interpretive information to school
classrooms relating to the Oregon Trail; dress in period dress. Travel to schools within 100-
mile radius of NHOTIC and deliver living history program. Perform outreach to schools to
schedule classroom visits.
Qualifications/Skills: Teaching, history, interpretation, and/or theater background desired.
Experience in developing scripts/interpretive performances desired. Ability to communicate
with 3rd through 5th grade audience required. Background check required for this position.
Valid driver’s license/insurance required if government vehicle is authorized for use. Ability
to lift 30 pounds.
