Worksite: National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC). NHOTIC is located 5
miles east of Baker City, Oregon, on Highway 86. NHOTIC is administered through the
Bureau of Land Management, Vale District Office.
Purpose: Provide assistance to research, write, and produce high quality public outreach,
informational, and instructional materials.
Timeframe: Hours can be extremely flexible.
Number of Volunteers Needed: No Limit
Specific Duties: Research and write documents including: articles for the Trail Mix
newsletter, press releases for Trail Tender and NHOTIC events and programs, responses to
public inquiries on historical questions, interpretive handouts. Proofread and edit
documents as requested by other staff and volunteers.
Qualifications/Skills: Familiarity and experience with writing and editing in a journalistic style,
grammar and editing skills, knowledge and ability to perform historical research using
available primary and secondary sources, ability to compose correspondence, creative
writing. Ability with Microsoft Word or similar word processing computer program
advantageous. To use government computers on site, a background check will be required.
Working on own computer or Trail Tender owned equipment does not require a background
check.
Training: NHOTIC will provide basic interpretation overview; Center orientation; Volunteer
Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities; Dealing with Difficult People; and Volunteer Safety.
Interpretive specialists will be available to provide guidance/assistance as needed.
Equipment: No special equipment is required.
