Six full scale replica wagons offer a glimpse of pioneer life on the trail. From this area at the top of Flagstaff Hill, visitors can view 13 miles of the original Oregon Trail—this would have been roughly a full day’s journey from Virtue Flat to the Powder River and beyond.
The wagon encampment is the site of our annual Labor Day Weekend reenactment of a wagon train “nooning” and mountain man camp. Costumed pioneer re-enactors prepare Dutch oven cooking samples and demonstrate pioneer life skills for visitors each year at this event. Demonstrations may include dutch-oven cooking, black powder shooting, and blacksmithing.

The annual Labor Day Weekend Wagon Encampment is a great time to volunteer at the Center. Living History Interpreters provide insight on pioneer life along the Trail to visitors, while other volunteers cook in Dutch Ovens over a campfire.
